Lisa’s Journey to Shoulder Health with Dr. David Hergan

At 74, Lisa had always been active, enjoying walks around her Middlesex neighborhood, tending to her beloved garden and teaching at Connecticut State Community College Middlesex. However, over time, pain in her shoulder began to build up, making daily activities increasingly difficult. Tasks like reaching up to grab something off a shelf, putting on a coat, swimming, and even gardening became painful. Lisa knew it was time to seek medical help.

After interviewing several surgeons, Lisa found Dr. Hergan and immediately felt comfortable.”Dr. Hergan took the time to explain the procedure and was proud of how great his team is. He made me feel very confident, especially knowing his team’s successful track record,” Lisa recalled.

On the day of her surgery, Lisa felt she was in good hands. “The team was terrific, and everything went like clockwork,” she shared. “Dr. Hergan took his time; I never felt rushed, and he was very friendly.”

Lisa’s surgery took place on January 4th. Despite friends warning her about the difficulty of recovery, Lisa was determined. She needed to get back to work by the end of January. As a public speaking and intrapersonal communication instructor at Connecticut State Community College Middlesex, Lisa was eager to return to her students.

With her daughter’s help during the initial recovery period, Lisa was able to return to teaching just three weeks after surgery. “My arm was stiff, but I could drive and use the computer,” Lisa said. She began physical therapy with Kendra and, eight weeks post-op, Dr. Hergan was thrilled with her progress. “He said I was a star for being able to reach over my head,” Lisa beamed.

Choosing to have the surgery was undoubtedly the right decision for Lisa. She’s even planning to have her other shoulder done by Dr. Hergan. Post-surgery, Lisa can now do things she loves, like gardening her perennials and participating in the Middlesex Pollinator Pathway Program. She keeps the garden tidy and loves to see her favorite peonies blooming this month.

To stay healthy, Lisa does water aerobics and chair yoga. Lisa explained, “Everyday activities like reaching up, swimming, and setting up my bird feeders hurt, but now I can enjoy them again.”

Lisa’s journey with Dr. Hergan and his team has restored her quality of life. She’s back to her active self, enjoying her hobbies and teaching with ease. “Choosing Dr. Hergan was the best decision for my health and well-being,” Lisa remarked.
