Physician Spotlight on Dr. Jaclyn Konopka

What inspired you to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery and specifically hip and knee replacement?

I was first drawn to medicine through a love of science and biomechanics, which deepened while working with patients facing serious challenges after brain injuries and joint disease. During medical school and residency, I saw firsthand how hip and knee replacement surgeries could restore mobility and transform lives, especially for those who had been living with long-term pain and disability. Combining my passion for problem solving with the ability to make such a meaningful difference for patients inspired me to specialize in hip and knee replacement surgery.

How would you describe your approach to patient care?

I firmly believe that every patient deserves a personalized approach to their care. I take the time to learn about each individual’s needs, lifestyle, and goals, as these guide my recommendations. I prioritize shared conversations when discussing whether non-operative or operative interventions are best. This includes reviewing risks and benefits, ensuring all non-surgical options are explored, and optimizing modifiable risk factors before surgery. My goal is for every patient to leave feeling comfortable, confident, and fully informed about their treatment plan.

What do you find most rewarding about working with patients who need hip or knee surgery?

Hip and knee replacement surgeries can transform the lives of patients who are truly suffering and debilitated. These procedures often provide long-lasting relief and restoration of mobility, allowing people to return to activities they thought were lost. Being able to make such a profound difference in a patient’s life is extremely rewarding and motivates me every day to provide the highest level of care.

Are there any advances in joint replacement you’re especially excited about?

The field of hip and knee replacement is advancing rapidly, with innovations focused on quicker recovery, lasting results, and improved function. Modern implants last significantly longer and feel more natural. I’m particularly excited about technologies and robotics that allow for personalized positioning and tensioning of implants, ensuring that each patient’s unique anatomy and needs are optimized. These innovations help patients achieve faster pain relief and better long-term outcomes.

Outside of medicine, what are some of your interests or hobbies?

Outside of medicine, I love spending time with my family and our rescue dog, Athena, who we enjoy taking on hikes and long walks. My husband and I also enjoy golfing, skiing, and playing tennis. We love exploring the nation’s national parks and hope to visit them all one day. As a former collegiate track and field athlete, running continues to be a strong passion of mine.
