The Injury
Janna is a group fitness instructor who had been experiencing post-workout pain for half of her life. She chalked it up to prior injuries, and had no idea that she had hip dysplasia and that her legs were two different lengths. The bones in her right hip had gotten so arthritic that the joint didn’t rotate at all. Over the years, her body had adjusted to it, overcompensating for the issue.
In fall 2024, Janna was teaching a yoga class when she felt a pop in her right hip. Her pain became much more severe, and she could no longer teach or do yoga.
The Solution
Janna visited Dr. Brandon Prioreschi, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement at Middlesex Orthopedic & Spine Associates.
Given the severity of her condition, and failure of conservative options, Dr. Prioreschi recommended a hip replacement.
“I was devastated. I was only 47 and I was worried that once I had my hip replaced, I wouldn’t be able to teach my classes,” recalled Janna.
Dr. Prioreschi reassured Janna that not only would she feel better, she would become a better instructor – he explained the science behind the surgery.
“He believed in me and I just had to believe in myself,” said Janna.
Janna underwent a total hip replacement at Midstate Medical Center, where she “felt like everyone there really cared about me”. They even asked for her favorite song to listen to as she was going under anesthesia.
The Results
Janna was very motivated in her recovery. With Dr. Prioreschi’s approval, she started teaching modified yoga classes only three months after surgery. With her zest for life back, Janna also returned to teaching step aerobics and weight training.
Janna also has a passion for gardening and plans to open a floral arrangement business. This was something she never dreamed she could do because her hip pain depleted her energy.
“When I say this surgery is life changing, I mean it,” said Janna. “It wasn’t just that my hip hurt, it affected how I interacted with my children, my work and my dreams of opening my own business.”
In the Surgeon’s Words
“When Janna walked into my office with that MRI, I knew a hip replacement was the only way she would find pain relief,” said Dr. Prioreschi.
“With her determination and passion for fitness, I knew she’d come out of the surgery even stronger than before. She’s completely inspiring in how she approached her recovery and I look forward to seeing what else she can achieve now!”
From the Patient’s Perspective
“Dr Prioreschi got that I was an athlete, he got my personality and he really worked with me,” said Janna.
“I’m doing the thing I love most, I have no pain anymore – not before or after workouts. I had no idea this pain-free life was on the other side of my hip surgery. I feel better now than in my 20s!”
