Dr. Sean O’Donnell is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who is fellowship-trained in both sports medicine and hand surgery. He cares for patients with a wide range of orthopedic conditions and injuries and has special interests in hand surgery, shoulder surgery, total joint replacement, sports medicine, and knee surgery. His passion, however, is hand surgery, and he currently focuses on hand, wrist, and elbow surgery.
He appreciates how meticulous hand surgery is, and can offer complex surgeries that many general orthopedic surgeons don’t have as much experience in. Still, he takes a conservative approach to surgery, only recommending it when other options have been exhausted.
Dr. O’Donnell chose a career in medicine as he was drawn to science, and he liked the idea of taking care of people. Orthopedics appealed to him as a specialty because of how gratifying it is to be able to fix a problem for a patient.
He started out in sports medicine because he had been an athlete himself, playing football and lacrosse in high school. Dr. O’Donnell then earned his bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College where he played lacrosse and helped to turn the program back into a division sport. He likes working with athletes and active people and helping them get back to the sports they love.
Dr. O’Donnell received his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center. He completed his fellowship training in Sports Medicine at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA and his fellowship in Hand Surgery at Berufsgenossenschafliches Unfall Krankehaus in Hamburg, Germany.
He is a senior attending physician at Middlesex Hospital and a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has been named a Castle Connolly and Connecticut Magazine Top Doctor since 2022.
Dr. O’Donnell is married and has five children. Two of his sons played Division 1 lacrosse at Marquette University, and his youngest daughter currently competes in Irish Dance. When he has time, he loves to cycle, hike, ski, and travel with his family.
